Frequently Asked Questions

About our service

What is PathDirect?

PathDirect is an online platform that offers a wide selection of pathology tests that can be self-ordered by individuals in Australia who are looking to take a proactive approach to their health and wellbeing. Whether you need a routine check or simply want deeper insights into your health, PathDirect is a single destination to get these important tests quickly and conveniently from the comfort of your home.

Simply order your tests, visit a nearby location and get your results usually within 24-48 hours. You can visit any one of over 1300 pathology collection centres in Australia at your own convenience.

PathDirect is not intended for individuals with ongoing or chronic illness, nor do we replace the traditional doctor-patient relationship. Our judgement-free platform gives you access to important health data so you can make informed decisions about your health. You should always seek medical advice from your regular healthcare practitioner.

What is self-request pathology?

'Self-request' pathology, also called 'direct-access' pathology or 'direct-to-consumer' pathology, is the process by which individuals can request pathology tests on their own without needing a consultation or referral from a GP.

This service gives individuals a convenient, confidential and user-friendly option to gain valuable insights into their health and well-being.

Why should I opt for online blood tests?

1. Convenience: Avoid scheduling appointments, traveling to a GP clinic and waiting in long queues. Order your tests with just a few clicks from home.

2. Accessibility: Access a wide range of tests without needing a doctor referral or consult, even in remote areas or with limited mobility.

3. Privacy: Discussing health concerns may feel uncomfortable. Online testing offers a discreet alternative without the need for face-to-face interactions.

Why should I choose PathDirect?

PathDirect was established to increase the accessibility of pathology testing in Australia. Given that pathology testing influences approximately 70% of all medical decisions, we believe all Australians should have access to this crucial information, no matter what they are. Ordering your tests through PathDirect is a convenient and confidential option to do these tests privately.

Our goal is to make health testing quicker, easier and more accessible for everyone.

Is this covered by Medicare or Insurance?

No. Our service is 100% private and therefore not covered by Medicare or Insurance.

Due to the nature of a self-requested pathology test, there is no medically documented reason (a referral) for needing these tests. We enable you to request these on your own to give you a convenient option for getting routine testing, and the ability to take control of your health and well-being.

Getting your tests

Who can buy these tests?

Anyone over the age of 18 in Australia can purchase our tests. Non-Australian residents are also able to get tests done through PathDirect, as long as they can visit one of our designated collection centres.

This service is not intended for individuals with ongoing conditions or chronic illness.

Where do I have to go to get my tests done?

You can visit any one of our designated collection centres near you to have your sample collected. There are over 1300 collection centres available across Australia, so there should be one near you.

Please always check to see the nearest collection centre, and if you cannot find one near you, please contact us.

Do I need to print my request form?

Yes. Please always download your request form and bring a printed copy when visiting the collection centre. This is to ensure the collector can properly identify you and confirm that the tests are legitimate.

Request forms can only be used once.

How long are my tests valid for?

All tests are valid for up to 180 days from the day you purchased them. Once a request form has been used once, it is no longer valid.

If you try to perform your tests after the 6 month period or multiple times for the same order, all results will be withheld and you will be charged additional fees.

How do I prepare for my test?

Some tests may require specific preparation to ensure the results are accurate. Please pay close attention to the information displayed on your request form.

Tests that need fasting will be clearly indicated as 'Yes' or 'No' on your request form. If your test requires fasting, please refrain from all food and drink (except water) for at least 8-12 hours prior to your test. We recommend doing these tests first thing in the morning to make it easier.

Always seek guidance from your regular doctor about stopping any medications before your test, as they are more informed about your current health status.

Collection centres

Do I need to make an appointment?

No, you do not need to schedule an appointment with the collection centre. You can visit any one of our designated collection centres by walking in at your own convenience. Please always check their opening/closing times as this will vary between locations.

Do I have to pay at the collection centre?

No, you do not have to pay anything at the collection centre. PathDirect covers the full cost of your tests once purchased. However, to avoid being billed again for your blood test, please only visit one of our designated collection centres.

What should I bring to the collection centre?

Please bring a printed copy of your pathology request form and valid photo ID (such as a Driver's license). You do not need to present a Medicare or Health Insurance card when doing your test.

All request forms are single-use only.

What can I expect at the collection centre?

Usually there is little to no wait time when visiting the collection cente, and samples are typically collected within a few minutes.

Most routine pathology tests involve drawing a small blood sample, while others may require a urine sample.

The pathology collector or phlebotomist will take your single-use request form and ask you some questions to confirm your identity.

Results

How will I receive my results?

Your test report will be available in your email as soon as results are ready. If you do not receive an email within 72 hours, please contact us at info@pathdirect.com.au

Any necessary comments, recommendations or follow-up instructions will be provided in your report or email.

When will I receive my results?

We understand your results are important to you. Most test results will be sent to you within 24-48 hours from the time that your sample was collected. However, we make no guarantees on the this timeframe.

Turnaround times often vary due to the number and type of tests ordered, when the sample was collected and the workload of the pathology laboratory.

For example, simple tests such as Full Blood Count and Testosterone are often processed and received within 12 hours. More complex tests, such as extended hormone panels, may take longer. If your sample was collected early in the morning, your results are more likely to be available sooner than a sample collected/processed in the afternoon.

What if my results are abnormal?

All results are overseen by our team of highly experienced AHPRA registered doctors.

It is important to note that we do not currently provide any interpretive advice for test results, nor do we engage with you in a normal doctor-patient relationship. We simply provide the means to access pathology tests. You should always speak to your regular health practitioner (such as a GP) for any guidance or concerns about your health.

That being said, if we do need to contact you urgently, we will do so using the contact details you provided to us at checkout. Most of our tests are routine and preventative in nature, so please do not be alarmed if a result is abnormal as there are many factors that can influence your results.

Can I show my GP the results?

Absolutely. We highly recommend that you share your results with your GP as they can provide valuable insights and tailored advice for a more informed discussion about your health.

We are not a substitute for your normal practitioner. A copy of your report can be provided to your doctor upon request.

Are my results accurate?

Yes. All tests purchased through PathDirect are conducted by trusted Australian pathology laboratories who are accredited by the National Association Testing Authority (NATA)

Reference ranges vary from lab to lab, and depend on the type of equipment used. Specific reference ranges are provided in the report with your results.
