What we test

Magnesium

Magnesium is a vital mineral found in every cell of your body, essential for energy production, muscle contraction, nerve function, cardiac rhythm, and bone health. Abnormal magnesium levels are often seen in conditions that impair or increase the excretion of magnesium through the kidneys or intestines, such as kidney disease, uncontrolled diabetes, or gastrointestinal disorders. This test helps diagnose these conditions and monitor the effectiveness of treatments like oral or IV magnesium supplements.

Copper

Copper is crucial for the formation of red blood cells, the absorption and utilization of iron, and the maintenance of healthy bones, blood vessels, nerves, and immune function. It is also important for the production of collagen and the functioning of the nervous system. Copper levels can be affected by various conditions, including Wilson’s disease, which leads to copper accumulation, or Menkes disease, which results in copper deficiency. Testing helps diagnose these conditions and monitor copper levels during treatment.

Selenium

Selenium is a trace element important for reproduction, thyroid hormone metabolism, DNA synthesis, and protection from oxidative damage and infection. Abnormal selenium levels can lead to conditions like Keshan disease, which affects the heart, and Kashin-Beck disease, which affects the bones and joints. Testing selenium levels helps diagnose deficiencies or toxicities and is important in managing diseases related to oxidative stress and thyroid function.

Zinc

Zinc is essential for immune function, protein synthesis, wound healing, DNA synthesis, and cell division. It also supports normal growth and development during pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence. Zinc deficiency can lead to growth retardation, hair loss, diarrhea, and delayed sexual maturation, while excess zinc can cause nausea, vomiting, and interfere with copper absorption. Testing zinc levels aids in diagnosing these conditions and ensuring proper zinc balance.

Manganese

Manganese is necessary for bone formation, blood clotting, and reducing inflammation. It plays a role in metabolism, calcium absorption, and blood sugar regulation. Abnormal manganese levels can lead to skeletal abnormalities and metabolic issues. High levels can be toxic, affecting the nervous system. Testing manganese levels helps in diagnosing and managing conditions related to bone health and metabolism.
